LAURENCE

14.2.1854  -  25.1.1927

Laurence, eldest of the family of Cornelius and Ann O’Loughlin, was born on 14 February 1854 in the Salisbury District, South Australia where his father Cornelius was engaged in farming until 1871 or 1872  when the family moved to Caltowie.

He  was occupied in farming at Caltowie,Telowie and afterwards at Booleroo.

Laurence became a member of Parliament representing the  Frome District from 1890-1892. From 1892 he was the member for Burra-Burra. He held the position of Commissioner of Crown Lands for three Governments:-

28 September 1896

He held other Government posts including the Mines Ministry during his parliamentary career..

He was Government whip from 1902 - 1904 and Speaker of the House of Assembly from 1912 to 1915.

Laurence’s political career and community life have been widely written about and alone he could easily be the subject of a substantial book so these aspects of his notable life are not recorded here at this stage.

In 1907 the family left Booleroo and took up pioneer land in Pinnaroo.  He retired from politics in 1918 and the following year became chairman of the Wheat Board.

Laurence died in Pinnaroo on 25 January 1927 and is buried in the Pinnaroo Cemetery.

Second Child:-

                                                                  JOHN

                                                                                                            27.7.1855  - 30.3.1929

John, Cornelius and Ann’s second child was born at Virginia on 27 July 1855. He, along with his brothers, Laurence and Cornelius were among the earliest students at Sevenhill College. He was a scholarly young man and always retained strong literary interests.

In his earlier days he farmed for some time, however, he spent a good deal of his life as a miner, at various types of mining. It is thought he also engaged in shearing.

He married Ellen Anne Henderson. They had a family of six sons and one daughter. Ellen predeceased John on 27 January 1915 and is buried at Booleroo Centre.

John O’Loughlin retired at Pinnaroo and lived with his son Cornelius and family. He died 30 March 1929. His grave with a  memorial is in the Pinnaroo Cemetery.

An older relative  (now deceased) thought
the above was probably  the photograph of
John O’Loughlin, but did not seem 100%
certain.

 Third Child:-

CORNELIUS

22.03.1857 -  08.09.1913

The third son was born on 22 March 1857 and was named after his father. Baptised on 29 March 1857, his sponsors were Patrick and Ellen Barry.
Like his two older brothers, he too went to Sevenhill College.

Cornelius married Helen Margaret Spain. He farmed at Telowie for a number of years, working an extensive area himself. He also engaged labourers to help work his large holding.

He later moved to the Hundred of Pirie South where he again farmed the land. From here the family moved to Napperby continuing farming. He was highly respected in the district and was honoured by being made a Justice of the Peace.

Cornelius and Helena had  three sons and three daughters.  Their son Louis was honoured by Pope Paul VI on 9 Dec 1965 in recognition of his service to the Diocese of Port Pirie, especially in the building of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Port Pirie. He was awarded the Paul  XI Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice. Cornelius is buried at Port Pirie.

 Fourth Child:-

MICHAEL

03.09.1858 -  27.06.1894

Michael was born on 3 September 1858 and like his older brothers was born at Virginia and was baptised at Salisbury on 12 September that year.

He owned and farmed land at Baroota for several years before leaving for Western Australia where he became quite a successful gold miner. Having purchased a share in a business at Hindmarsh he was about to return to South Australia in June 1894 when news came through to his relatives that his body with head wounds, had been found in the sea near the Fremantle Jetty. Despite the fact that money was still in his pockets and the head  wounds could have been caused by the fall, there was speculation that he  could have been murdered for gold.
His fatality was reported in “The  Southern Cross” and “Evening Standard’ Newspapers and The West Australian.

Michael was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Fremantle. He had never married and was aged 35 years and 9 months at the time of his death.

Susan married William Austin Carter at the age of  33 on 4 June 1895 and they went to live at Warnertown.

They shifted to Port Pirie about 1902 where William entered into the butcher trade owning his own business. They moved to Adelaide in 1929 living at Torrensville. (After Susan’s death, the family made their home at 6 Dulcie Street Dulwich. This remained in the family until the 1960’s  and was subsequently owned by Kitty and Gertie O’Loughlin until about 1968 after Kitty’s death. Annie O’Loughlin lived next door at number 8 until a year prior to her death in 1979.)

Susan and William had five children - George, Annie, Eileen, Mary and Frank. Annie died in early childhood.

Of her family, Susan seems to have been renowned for speaking of the early days and about her parents, according to some of the next generation.

Susan O’Loughlin Carter died on 16 June 1937 and is buried at West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide. Her husband, William, survived her until 5 November 1942.

Ellen, born 11.3.1865 and known also as Bell, left the Caltowie farm about 1900 and with her sister Anne, had a cottage built in Port Pirie.

After Anne’s death in 1907, Bell moved to Adelaide and lived with her sister Susan Carter and family at Torrensville until Susan’s death in 1937 after which the Carter family and Bell moved to 6 Dulcie Street, Dulwich. Sue Domaschenz, her great niece shared her room with her at Dulwich as a small girl and remembers “Auntie Bell” as having very good humour. She was a woman of pleasant appearance. In physical stature she was not a very big woman.

Ellen did not marry and was aged 75 at the time of her death in August 1940.

She was buried 4.8.1940 in  West Terrace Cemetary Adelaide- Catholic Section, Path M, Lot 217C, Western Rd.). Her grave has no memorial monument but can be located between the memorials for Versace and Carey.

She is buried in the Port Pirie Cemetery.

There is no known picture of Anne

Tenth Child:-

 PATRICK

07.07.1870 -  24.02.1943

Eleventh Child:-

CATHERINE

09.03.1872 -  03.07.1910

Catherine, who was known as Kate, was born on 9 March 1872 according to her birth certificate at Gawler River, although some church records suggest she was born on 3 March and baptised on the 9th. Her being born at Gawler River in 1872 suggests that her mother had probably remained at or near the original farm at Virginia until after Catherine’s birth, prior to moving to Caltowie. (The rest of the family were thought to have moved to Caltowie in 1871- but it may have been 1872).

Catherine entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart on 15th August 1894 at Kensington and received her habit on 16 January 1896.  She was professed three years later on 24th August 1897.

Her life vows were made on 16 February 1908.  She was known in religion as Sister Mary Reginald of the Assumption.

A newspaper obituary (believed from The Southern Cross) reported that prior to her death “she had been in delicate health for some time and had joined the order 16 years previously and spent some time teaching in country schools including Pekina and Kadina where she was well known and highly respected. She had latterly been stationed at Kensington”. She would most certainly have known and served under the co-founder and head of order, now known as Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

Catherine died at the Kensington Convent on Sunday 3 July 1910 and is buried in the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Cemetery, at Mitcham, South Australia.

Twelfth Child:-

DAVID

01.04.1874 - 24.09.1954

David was born on 1 April 1874.  Of Cornelius and Ann’s family, he was last child born.

Ellen, Anne, Patrick & his wife Minnie, and David worked the farm at Caltowie some time after their father’s death in 1897. Patrick and David dissolved their farming partnership in 1906. Prior to serving in World War 1, David bought land at Penola. On returning from military service he worked for the Wheat Board in Port Pirie.

Later he moved to Pinnaroo where he bought a repatriation block. He sold this to Kennedys in 1927 and spent  many years with his nephews and nieces.

David was the “odd-jobs man about the place and took care of things like gardening, separating the milk/cream and so forth at “The Oaks”,- the farm of his oldest brother Laurence’s family. He never married. The last surviving member of his family, David  died in Adelaide at  the  age of  80 and is buried in the Catholic section of the Pinnaroo Cemetery.
